Discrimination (歧視) is one of the biggest issue that a kid or adult with

Down Syndrome (唐氏症) will be confronted with (面臨). big and

eventually life threatening acts of discrimination comes through the

health and fitness industry (企業). For example, people with Down

Syndrome will be discriminated by the medical profession by being

denied treatment (治療), on the basis that people with Down Syndrome

are unable to follow post operative procedures (術後程序). This means

that if someone with Down Syndrome requires a heart transplant (心臟移植)

or some such, then they will be more than likely discriminated against,

even if it means they lose their life. This medical discrimination against

those with Down Syndrome is very obvious (明顯的), but the fitness

industries discrimination against those with Down Syndrome can be

just as devastating (摧毀的) and life threatening (威脅).
Essentially (本質上) the discrimination is culturally based--people draw

lines and say, at this level of intelligence IQ we devalue (貶低) life and
will not support people with Down Syndrome to lead normal lives

(過正常的生活). Changing the cultural values of the society

(改變社會的文化價值觀) is essential for ending much of the discrimination

against those with Down Syndrome.
